DENIAL - a play and discussion

commemorating Holocaust Memorial Day

Lisburn City Council, as part of its Good Relations Programme, is organising a performance of DENIAL followed by two discussions on the topics covered within the play. 

This play to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day
will take place at the

Studio Theatre,
Island Arts Centre,
Lagan Valley Island, Lisburn
at 7.30 pm on Thursday 26 January. 

Refreshments will be provided.
There is a lower age limit of 15 set for this play. 
Tickets cost £5 per person. 

Holocaust Memorial Day is on 27 January. 
This play is one of a number of events being held
across the United Kingdom to commemorate the Holocaust and
its theme is ‘Speak Up Speak Out’. 

This is an excellent opportunity for members of your group to explore and commemorate the Holocaust. 

THE PERFORMANCE

In DENIAL there are no compromises on either language or offensive behaviour.  The characters are racist and this is reflected directly in the language they choose to use.  Setting such characters against a backdrop of projected pictures from Auschwitz is a powerful and thought-provoking experience for both audience and actors. 

Counterpoint is also achieved by a second part to the play which tells stories of rescue and kindness to the victims of the holocaust.

DENIAL is not to be seen as a history lesson, it is about discrimination because of difference. 

 

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

DENIAL is a stark and uncompromising play which addresses issues of sectarianism, race hatred, homophobia, freedom of expression and discrimination. The play also as its title suggests confronts the issue of Holocaust denial.  The genesis for the play was a visit to Auschwitz by members of the theatre company in November 2004.  During this visit they encountered direct evidence of the way in which members of groups dedicated to race hatred, visit Auschwitz to commemorate not the dead but the architects of the final solution.
